A splendid evening at Hexham yesterday with The Flaming Matron winning the mares hurdle under an intelligent and ultimately strong ride from Lucy, Marlee Massie finally looking as if he might be a racehorse though not staying in the end and Kit winning the closing race for Martin Todhunter, his first win for an outside trainer.  The Flaming Matron seemed to race with much more zest back over hurdles and having been headed after the last was very game in battling back to put her head in front on the line, she’s had a few issues and its been a good team effort to get her back to win and pleased to have one on the board for the new season.

The Flaming Matron

I forsook the delights of Hexham for a half term outing involving rather a long walk round Loch Leven (www.lochlevenheritagetrail.co.uk) not very sensible for a middle-aged, overweight man to do without any training, I should know better but I think I now know what horses feel like when they “tie up”.   Lucy back to Cartmel today where she rides Patriot in the 2.20 and the wonderful Soul Magic in the 3.20.

The vast expanse of Loch Leven - no wonder it feels like a long way to walk round!
