Steamy this morning, not half as steamy as in the South but steamy for Scotland. A fine quiet warm summer’s day racing at Perth yesterday, Bertie Milan ran well for a long way until his 3 weeks in the field took their toll and he faded into 4th.
The Flaming Matron didn’t take a cut at her hurdles and showed every sign of being over the top after being in training for a long time, she will be retired now and return to the paddocks in Co Tipperary where she was born, as a dual winner from a good family she should make a nice broodmare – a son of her dam’s sister by Robin des Champs topped last week’s Derby Sale at a staggering EU320,000.
Some heavy showers at Perth overnight and we head back there today where we have three runners starting with Master Butcher in the 3.30, Kit rides and 11 run. He did well for us earlier in the year and is top weight in this novice handicap, he may be a little stuffy after his break and I suspect there may be some better treated rivals lurking lower in the weights. Then Humphrey Bee (Brian Harding) reappears in the 4.30, 8 run, he won over course and distance on his last appearance which was at this meeting last year, he will come on for this fitness wise as he hasn’t been in for long and is a very big horse.
Finally Andhaar will run in the 5.00, Stephen rides and 8 run, he was withdrawn yesterday in the hope of overnight rain and seems well and fresh though it is two years since he ran over hurdles. A good bit of BHA “bonkersism” in today’s official distances – the novice hurdle is described as 2m 7f 202 yards add 115 yards! Umm, so that’s 3m then which it was in the first place before someone decided that 3m wasn’t precise enough and someone had to remeasure all the distances for every race based on every different railing position……
