Cold but gloriously crisp and clear today, a work day for most of the horses, eighteen on the all-weather and half a dozen on the grass.  Musselburgh’s jumps season kicks off tomorrow and we have one runner on ground described as good with good to firm places, very different from here then.  Whybutwhy is making his stable debut in the 1.30, Stephen rides and 8 run.  This American bred horse appreciates fast ground and has won on the flat and over fences but never over hurdles, he only came over from Ireland a month or so ago and tomorrow will be a fact finding exercise as much as anything else.

I am very optimistic that appointing Nick Rust from Ladbrokes as the new BHA Chief Executive will turn out to be an inspired move, whilst many will be naturally suspicious of someone coming over from “the opposition” his profound love of the sport will hopefully win them over.  I just hope that the factions within the industry will give him the mandate required for him to make a proper impact – the absence of a proper mandate appears to have been the Achilles heel for the previous incumbents and it is more important than ever that the industry has the right leadership to grasp the fantastic opportunities that lie ahead.
