Cold and frosty now, porridge season, golden syrup variety with, yes, added golden syrup, so long as carefully timed when you know who is outside feeding her chickens. A man needs fuel in this weather, a dry few days means that the gallop is taking the frost well and horses working hard but despite that they seem to be fresher every day, either in great form or over the top, tomorrow might show us.
We have five runners at Musselburgh if it beats the frost, will be touch and go, didn’t rise above freezing here today and was only 3 degrees in Edinburgh, the ground I suspect will ride on the dead side of good; we start with two runners in the 12.10 – Goldtrek with Lucy on board and Northern Acres with Joe Colliver, 15 run. They both seem in good heart and won’t mind the ground, the the trip is the unknown as both are tackling 3 miles for the first time. Then in the 1.45 we run Issabella Gem, again with Lucy on top, 14 run this time, she should improve a little for the step up in trip but needs to settle better before she will be seen to best effect. The King Brex with Kit in the 2.55, 15 run, he was runner up at the track last time but this looks more competitive. Finally in the 3.25 my much loved home bred filly Spinning Away makes her racecourse debut with Lucy aboard (as long as there is some give in the ground), 13 run, she is a big strong staying type who will find this too sharp but we need to start somewhere so she is following in the footsteps of her big brother Buffalo Ballet.
Lucy also rides Ballymacduff in the 1.10, Red Tanber in the 2.20 and Lillioftheballet in the 2.55
