Cool again today with showers forecast, snow on the high ground but basically a fine week’s weather and splendid racing again yesterday at Perth. An excellent 2nd in the opener from Another Mattie in his first hurdle race, beaten less than a length giving the winner the best part of a stone, more to come from him I hope. Then in the Festival Champion Hunter chase the bravest of runs from the veteran pair Noir et vert and Uncle Jamie, 2nd after an extended three and a quarter miles, 12yo horse ridden by 48yo rider who had moved mountains to make the weight – a proper example of the sheer grit and determination involved in the “amateur” end of our wonderful sport – fantastic. Otherwise Academy shaped better to come 5th stepped up in grade and trip, he should be able to get his head in front soon, Jet Master proved he could be dropped in which bodes well for his future chasing next season though ultimately he ran a little flat perhaps showing the effects of a long season and King Brex needs a break which is exactly what he is going to have. Fortunately the Perth Executive how exhausted and in need of refreshment I have appeared over the last two days and made appropriate arrangements in the Committee’s Box –
Back to Perth today and a busy time in prospect, we start with two runners in the 2.20 – Elmaatigra (Lucy), a runner up last time who may find the drop back in trip on the sharp side and Ballet d’Anges (Wilson Renwick) who has only been with us for a short time and showed poor form last time out, he has always appeared a nice horse to me so we will see. Then in the 2.55 we run Rossini’s Dancer, in good form at home but another that may find the trip on the sharp side despite having won this race last year in rather different conditions. Then Northern Acres in the 3.25, he seems in good form but has gone up a long way in the weights now. first time cheek pieces for him. Papamoa will only line up in the 4.30 if it rains and then we have Daasij in the 5.05 – a winner last time out but this is a big step up in class and then Frankie’s Promise in the last race, another last winner last time but a big weight reversal with the runner up.
