A fine spring day, a bit cool but been a splendid drying week, fine for farming – for racing horses – not sure, been able to do plenty of work on the grass and the horses appear to be thriving from a bit of sun on their backs.  A tough day at Wetherby on Tuesday, Ceilidh looking like putting up a career best effort, jumping finally as it should be, travelling sweetly in second when she strained her tendon turning into the home straight; Lucy pulled her up quickly and she was attended to very promptly by the vets but scant reward for her owners’s patience, she will need a long rest to allow this to repair.

Isla Pearl Fisher

Isla Pearl Fisher – his hood is left off tomorrow

A busy day tomorrow with 4 declared runners at Kelso and 4 or 5 heading to the Lanark point-to-point, drying spring ground always a concern but hopefully still on the easy side of good at both tracks.  Excellent prize money on offer at Kelso and once again they have produced an excellent card of highly competitive racing, Channel 4 paying their annual visit and our first runner is Isla Pearl Fisher in the 2.15, Peter Buchanan rides and 10 run, he seems in good fettle but is on a high enough handicap mark.

Landecker - races with cheek pieces tomorrow, should appreciate the better ground but will he stay 3m 3f?

Then in the 2.50 we run Landecker, Lucy rides and 10 run, this is a competitive race for a good prize and there are plenty of promising horses in it but Landecker seems to save his best for this track, is very fresh and well and could run a big race if he stays the extreme distance.

Then in the 4.35 we run Another Mattie, Lucy rides and 14 run, he has also run some nice races at Kelso, should like the trip and ground, is on a feasible handicap mark and run much better last time out back over hurdles at Ayr.  Finally in the 5.10 Heilan Rebel makes his racecourse debut in the bumper, Lucy rides and 11 run.

Heilan Rebel (Liam) at Musselburgh last month

Heilan Rebel (Liam) at Musselburgh last month

This horse has been very slow to come to hand after a couple of setbacks since coming over from Ireland last September however he has started to bloom in the last 10 days and finally shown me what the vendors said he could do, I would have preferred another racecourse gallop and another month with him but this is a nice race for him on what should be nice ground so I thought we better just go for it.  Lucy is at Sedgefield today to ride Snuker in the 4.05, Kit rides Tommysteel in the same race, Sharivarry in the 3.00 and King of the Dark in the 4.35.  At Lanark tomorrow we hope to run Afterclass, Master Butcher, Rossini’s Dancer and Back on the Road.
