Well, after a weekend of much prevarication we eventually ran two of our four declared runners and luckily chose the right two as they both won at Carlisle in the grittiest of fashion. A memorable day and wonderful to see Tipsy Dara grind it out for her 4th win of 2012, she coughed and had yellow goo coming out of her nose on Saturday morning so was nearly withdrawn but a Heath Robinson invention and hard work from the staff sorted it out though I was far from confident. Standintheband was very brave in making a winning stable debut in the bumper and provided a little compensation to the Macdonalds after their sad loss of Four Fiddlers at Aintree in October.
At 11.15 yesterday morning I was sitting in my car, I had already been at Carlisle for half an hour and was listening to Desert Island Discs and catching up on some email. To be honest I was feeling rather knackered, a marvellous party the night before had once again been curtailed by the Cinderella effect and prospect of a 6am start, I am sure most of my fellow revellers were only just waking up, a touch of envy perhaps, but horses running well and most of all winners makes it all worth while and the journey home flew by in an elated blur of texts, music and phone calls. Back home for Sports Personality of the Year, challenging when one is already feeling rather emotional but what a year,so much talent and dedication worthy of true celebration and maybe a reminder that a life dedicated to sport is perhaps not as trivial as it can sometimes feel.
Tomorrow we run Northern Acres in the 12 40 at Catterick, Blair Campbell who works in the yard has his first ride for us and I imagine they will go well.
