A brutal day for the yard at Perth yesterday and a sombre atmosphere this morning, Standintheband died instantly when falling heavily going out on the second circuit, he was travelling nicely in about 3rd position at the time.
Earlier in the afternoon The Bishop put in a lacklustre effort prior to suffering from a severe bout of heat exhaustion, in took about 20 minutes of intense cooling by the team and the racecourse vets to bring him back to normal but fortunately he seems fine tonight, a timely reminder of why it is called “the winter game”. Gold Opera finished 8th of 16 but didn’t really handle the tighter track and better ground, he should make a nice chaser next winter; Calivigny jumped and travelled well, was then outpaced prior to staying on and finishing in the 4th position the market suggested, he may have one more run before heading to grass. Bracing was running a nice race until badly hampered when Standintheband fell, this put her off a bit and Kit wisely pulled her up after 3 out, a break at grass beckons for her.
We will be hoping for better luck back at Perth today when we have 7 declared runners starting with 3 in the rather competitive looking 18 runner 2.50, Northern Acres and Kit teamed up to win this race last year and he races off 7lb higher today, he seems most effective over further but we said that last year! Brothers Clan Legend (Lucy) and Clan Chief (Blair) are also declared, the former makes his handicap debut but will probably be better on softer ground and the latter needs to learn to settle if he is race effectively. We then run Landecker in the 3.20, 10 run, Lucy rides, he was a good 2nd at Kelso last week and should go well again if this doesn’t some too soon. Master Butcher (Kit) and Royal Chatelier (Jamie) run in the Hunter Chase at 4.55, both have been in good form in the pointing field recently and have each way chances. Finally Dutch Canyon makes his handicap debut at 5.25, Lucy rides and he seems fit and well and will hopefully handle the faster pace of handicaps. Looks like being another lovely early summer day but a rude shock awaits tomorrow night, should lead to some nice ground at the Balcormo point-to-point on Saturday.
