Horses ate and drank well last night, always a relief as one is never sure how they will settle in a strange place, easier if there are a few of them I think. Of course, we go there in trepidation, this time last year Dan Macdonald, myself, Lucy and Kit were there with Four Fiddlers and Emma who looked after him, it was a beautiful morning and hopes were high when we watched Lucy take him out to stretch his legs, the whole day went perfectly until four furlongs out, travelling strongly on the heals of the leaders he suddenly faltered and Lucy quickly pulled up and dismounted. He had struck into himself badly and after the best possible veterinary care and subsequent transfer to Liverpool University Veterinary Hospital it was obvious nothing could be done, so the lorry came home empty that night and having lost Cheatingsideoftown 48 hours earlier at Carlisle it was a long and silent drive home. I’ve been keen to go back there today every since, as has Dan, we had hoped to run his and Michelle’s Standintheband in the same race but we didn’t fancy him carrying top weight in his first handicap so Alistair and Sheena Cochrane’s Milano Magic goes for us instead, I am delighted though that Dan and Michelle will be there with their Paul Nicholls trained Silsol running in the last – emotions will be shared and lets hope we have fun but the main thing will be to bring all the horses and riders home safe. I hope you don’t mind if I share a few pictures from that wonderful morning filled with expectation. Oh dear, that’s 20 minutes gone and I only went online to look at the weather forecast – addicted to blogging!
