Cold still, ground hard here but nothing extreme. A long trip to Wetherby on Saturday, Little Glenshee’s race wasn’t really run to suit her, then she made a mistake and took a little time to regain her confidence, race over but she plugged on to be 5th, there will be another day for her, Road to Gold put up an excellent effort to come 2nd under a penalty, I guess 2m is probably his trip on that ground but he had no chance with the winner who I am sure is a very decent horse, interestingly it was his racecourse debut at the age of 6 having been bought as a store as a 3yo at DBS Spring Sales in May 2013, patience is the key in this game.
Off to Ayr today where the ground is heavy and somewhat absurdly we have 11 declared runners, not a situation I am especially happy with; I take no pleasure from running horses in the yard against each other but all of these horses have missed recent engagements thanks to the weather and need to run, fixtures are sparse for the rest of the month and the forecast uncertain so it is only right that they all get their chance. We start with 3 runners in the 1.25 – Bertalus (Lucy), Farewelltocheyenne (Stephen) and Titian Boy (Brian Harding). 10 run, all 3 are nice horses for the future who would prefer slightly better ground.
Then in the 2.00 we also run 3, Heilan Rebel (Lucy), Lake View Lad (Stephen) and The Bishop (Brian Harding) – HR makes his hurdling debut after showing promise in bumpers but would prefer better ground, Lake View Lad was travelling well in front when coming down at the last over course and distance 3 weeks ago – he ought to win with a clear round providing that hasn’t left it’s mark and The Bishop is a chaser for whom we cannot find a chase to run in so he’s having a spin round here today instead, 10 run. In the 2.35 we run Gold Opera (Lucy) and The Orange Rogue (Stephen) – 8 run, I am hoping Gold Opera can build on his recent Newcastle win now he is stepped up in trip and The Orange Rogue is in good form and will love the ground, it is a tough little race though. Frankie’s Promise is a non runner in the 3.05 now that the ground is heavy, hopefully Newcastle on Monday for him, probably in a hurdle if conditions don’t dry up. More Madness (Kit) runs in the 3.40, he wears a visor and is slipping down the weights – I hope he will run better than his odds suggest, 10 run. Finally we run Academy in the 4.15, Lucy rides and 10 run, he may switch to Musselburgh tomorrow if the ground is very testing. So that’s that, a day in which I am most grateful for 35 minute gaps between races!
